Ibrahim Ferrer - Mi Suenoo (2007)

The Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer emerged as the most popular star of the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon. Ibrahim who is pictured on the cover of that classic album, was the audience favourite from the Wim Wenders' film and he went on to record solo albums produced by Ry Cooder and tour the world to a rapturous reception. Now World Circuit is proud to announce the release of his final album `Mi Sueno' (My Dream) the project he dreamed of realising all his life - an album devoted to the most meltingly romantic of all Cuban styles - the bolero.

Two years ago Ferrer began recording the bolero album he had long dreamed of. `Mi Sueno' is an intimate all-star session arranged by Roberto Fonseca, the remarkable young pianist with whom he had developed a deep musical understanding. Recorded in Havana with a wonderful small group that included Manuel Galban on guitar and Cachaito Lopez on bass, the album is a very personal take on the bolero style - deeply traditional and at the same time startlingly modern.

Sadly three weeks before the final recording for the album was due to take place in August 2005, Ibrahim died at the age of seventy-eight. On his deathbed, he dictated a letter asking that his dream album be finished. Fortunately he had left high-quality demos of the songs with which he wished to make up the rest of the album. In the confusion surrounding his death these tapes were temporarily lost, causing a delay in the album's completion. When the tapes were found, they not only completed the album Ibrahim had always dreamed about, but also are a fitting final testament that finds the singer still in heartfelt voice and singing the songs he loved best.

Personnel: Ibrahim Ferrer - (vocals), Roberto Fonseca - (piano), Ruben Gonzalez - (piano) (3), Omara Portuondo - (vocals) (11), Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez - (bass), Manuel Galban - (guitar), Ramses Rodriguez - (drums), Amadito Valdes - (timbales), Emilio del Monte - (bongos, maracas) and others

Eliades Ochoa - Sublime Illusion

Eliades Ochoa seems like the lone cowboy of the Buena Vista Social Club. Photographer Anton Corbjin captured that quality for the cd cover. He has been annointed as the keeper of Cuban guajira music, the godfather of Guajira & Roll, if you will. On his first U.S. release, he covers 15 songs of different periods in Cuban musical history. Son, guaracha, bolero, it’s all here, along with Ry Cooder, David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, and Charlie Musslewhite.

"Pintate los labios Maria" (" Put on some lipstick Maria") will not ingratiate any feminists but it’s still a contagious song with a Mexican brass band sound. David Hidalgo adds his Los Lobos guitar licks to "Que humanidad" while Ry Cooder guest stars with his guitar on "La Comparsa". The title track, "Sublime Ilusion", is a tender bolero that is both refined and restrained by Ochoa’s gentle voice. Ochoa also covers a Gardel tango, "Volver", giving it a Cuban identity. Listening to Ochoa’s sublime vocals and guitar on "Mi Magdalena" will make you weep or turn you into a pillar of salt for being so devoid of sentimentality.

One of the benefits of these releases by Cuban musicians is the exchange that is now possible. Legendary Charlie Musselwhite comes in with his bluesman harmonica on "Teje que Teje", giving it a down home feel. At the same time, Eliades Ochoa y el Cuarteto Patria appear on Musslewhite’s disc Continental Drifter. Blues, rock, tango, guaracha all sound best when top musicians are involved.

* Humberto Ochoa - second guitar, backing vocals

Eliades Ochoa - Estoy Como Nunca

He's been called the "Cuban Johnny Cash;" and, like Cash, he's also a Grammy winner. He won his hardware from 1997's Buena Vista Social Club. In 1999, he was also nominated for his solo album, Sublime Ilusion in the category of "best traditional tropical and Latin performance" and he was later nominated in the same category for Estoy Como Nunca (Better Than Ever).

With his 10-gallon hat and cowboy boots, the Santiago-born Vocalist-guitarist Eliades Ochoa is known as the "cowboy" of the world-renowned Buena Vista Social Club. Because of his success with that group, he's made a few recordings of his own as the leader of Quarteto Patria. On this CD, Ochoa's romantic tenor voice and bouncy guitar playing are marvelously motored by the rhythms of the Cuban son. Along with trumpeter Anibal Avila, Ochoa is joined by special guest singer Raul Malo of the Mavericks on "No Me Preguntes Tanto," and guitarist David Hidalgo of Los Lobos lends his plectral pulsations to the title cut. Compay Segundo's heartfelt "Llora Mi Nena," and "El Chicarron es Pellejo" best reveal the rural blend of Spanish and African rhythms, melodies, instruments, and song forms that Eliades Ochoa highlights so well in his artistry.

Pio Leyva - Pio Leyva & Friends

Pío Leyva looms among the giants of Cuban music. Though one of the most successful soneros of the pre-revolution era, he only earned international renown in his twilight years thanks to the landmark album and documentary Buena Vista Social Club. Born Wilfredo Pascual in Morón, Cuba, on May 5, 1917, he won a local bongo-drumming contest at the age of six and at 15 was tapped to sing with Juanito Blez's band Conjunto Caribe. Upon relocating to Havana, Leyva lent his appealingly gravelly vocals to a series of acts including Orquesta de Jesús Montago, Orquesta Raqueteros del Swing, Orquesta del Paseiro, and Sexteto Colón; he also formed a trio sponsored by a local brand of coffee, Café el Angel, and was a fixture of Cuban radio. Leyva signed to RCA Victor in 1950 and in the years to follow cut more than two dozen LPs for the label, scoring a succession of smash hits including "Un Jardinero de Amor" and "Chapaleando." Nicknamed "El Montunero de Cuba" for his matchless improvisational acumen, Leyva recorded with the likes of Mariano Mercerón, Orquesta Cosmópolita, and Niño Rivera and also sang backup for Beny Moré, who popularized his best-known composition, "Francisco Guayabal." In March 1957, Leyva was in the studio collaborating with singer/guitarist Compay Segundo when rebel forces launched their assault on Cuban president Fulgencio Batista's Havana palace. According to legend, the session was later issued commercially complete with the sound of gunfire in the background.

Even before Eliades Ochoa made his now famous CD with the Buena Vista Social Club he was already considered to be 'the Lion of Santiago', the greatest musician in the Casa de la Trova where he would sit down in front of the small audience and sing words of this Puerto Rican plena about the people who run out of the zoo once they hear that the Lion is Loose.

It took the Buena Vista phenomenon to win Eliades the recognition that he deserves although his body of work reveals the enormous talent that he has as a guitarist and singer, with or without the more recent international fame.
